Red Hortensia is an original contemporary floral painting combining lush, expressive blossoms with a beautifully restrained composition.
Clusters of hydrangea flowers unfold across the surface in rich shades of pink, crimson, burgundy and white. Each flower head is built from numerous individual brushstrokes, creating a wonderfully abundant texture and a striking contrast with the soft grey and white background.
I deliberately kept the surrounding composition light and open. Fine black stems, sweeping gestural marks and softly textured grey passages provide structure without competing with the flowers. A single pale hydrangea creates a fresh counterpoint to the intense pink and red tones and brings balance to the composition.
For me, Red Hortensia is about the fascinating contrast within hydrangeas themselves – their individual flowers are delicate and small, yet together they form magnificent, almost sculptural clouds of colour.
The square format and elegant silver aluminium frame give the painting a clean, contemporary appearance. With its combination of vibrant florals and neutral tones, it can introduce colour into an interior without overwhelming the surrounding space.
