In 1896, Claude Monet began his legendary Nymphéas series — a lifelong meditation on light, water and reflection that would define Impressionism itself. Lesley Blackburn's The Midnight Waterlilies is a deeply personal response to that legacy: a large-scale statement painting in oils, impasto, oil sticks and mixed media that channels Monet's obsession with the transient surface of water, reimagined after dark.
Where Monet worked in the dappled light of his Giverny garden, Blackburn works at midnight — the palette shifting to deep ultramarine and cobalt blues, luminous greens, blush pinks and pure whites that capture the moody, electric stillness of water under a night sky.
