I wanted the blue forms to feel as though they were expanding across the canvas – somewhere between a wave, a landscape and something organic beginning to bloom. Rather than defining the subject, I prefer to leave space for the viewer's own associations.
The calm cream and sand-toned background provides an important counterbalance to the energetic centre of the painting. This combination of vivid blue, generous negative space and tactile texture gives Blue Bloom a contemporary yet surprisingly serene character.
